There was a lot of speculation that WWE might respond to CM Punk's return on AEW: Rampage with an equally major surprise during tonight's SummerSlam PPV, and sure enough, Becky Lynch showed up after 16 months away to win the SmackDown Women's Championship.

The circumstances of The Man's return were somewhat controversial, however.

Belair was scheduled to defend her title against Sasha Banks, but moments before The Boss was supposed to make her entrance, we were told that Carmella would be replacing her in the match. Right before they locked up, Lynch's music hit to a massive pop.

Becky took Carmella out, and challenged Belair to a one-on-one match for the title. After feigning a handshake, she hit what we assume is her new finisher, The Man-Handle Slam (a version of the Rock Bottom), to pin her opponent and become the blue brand's new Women's Champion.

As great as it was to see The Man back in the ring, was this squash match really necessary? The whole thing seemed very last-minute, and there's a chance WWE needed to speed things up in order to introduce the Olympic gold medallists who waved to the crowd in the next segment.

Whatever the case may be, the consensus seems to be that this was highly disrespectful to Belair and could have been handled a lot better.

No the squash was not needed at all. Everyone's fine with Becky winning the belt but squashing Bianca was not the way to do it. Absolutely no one benefits from this.

WWE somehow managed to [frick] up Becky's return. How tf do you do that?
