Roman Reigns managed to retain the Universal Championship against "The Demon" Finn Balor last night, but only after one of the ropes in the ring ended up breaking. Unsurprisingly, most fans weren't impressed.

Extreme Rules was main evented by Universal Champion Roman Reigns putting his title on the line against Finn Balor. "The Demon" put on one hell of a display against the Head of the Table, and WWE doubled down on the supernatural side of the character. That was evident shortly after Balor was speared through the barricade by Reigns and a heartbeat sound started playing!

With that, "The Demon" got a second life and hit Reigns with a series of chairshots and a dropkick through a table. After fending off The Usos earlier in the match, it seemed like Balor had the title within his grasp; however, after heading to the top rope to hit the coup de grace, the rope broke and sent him crashing to the mat.

With that Reigns was able to hit the Spear in order to retain the championship once the 1-2-3 was counted.

Needless to say, the response to this finish online has been overwhelmingly negative. While WWE was clearly looking to protect Balor's "Demon" persona, the fact he lost because the rope just randomly broke is beyond ridiculous and doesn't really do him or Reigns any real favours.

Balor has talked a lot about not wanting to bring this gimmick back after becoming "The Prince" in NXT, so it now remains to be seen where things go next for him...AEW, perhaps?

Check out some highlights from the match below (unsurprisingly, WWE has not shared any footage of this embarrassing closing few moments of the bout).
