Speculation has been running rampant that former Universal Champion Kevin Owens is planning to leave WWE when his contract expires early next year. That led to fans wondering about what the future could hold in store for his old friend/enemy Sami Zayn, especially when it's fair to say that he's never been particularly well-utilised as main roster talent.
Dave Meltzer initially reported that Zayn's contract is set to expire later this year, but Author/historian Pat Laprade has since claimed the actual date is more like Spring 2022.
In a 2018 interview with Laprade, the former NXT Champion told him that he signed a three-year deal when he injured his shoulder in June 2018. That means his contract has already ended, but as Laprade explains, time would have been added to that to make up for the time he was sidelined. Now, it sounds like his time with WWE will be up either in late March or early April.
Ultimately, it's entirely possible that Zayn will choose to stick with WWE, but he does seem like a perfect fit for AEW (and the opportunities working with them would present him in Japan).
However, we can't help but speculate wildly, and if Owens and Zayn do leave WWE for AEW...well, we could see Kevin Steen at AEW Revolution in February and El Generico at Double Or Nothing in May.
