Oliveira silenced the doubters on Saturday night by showcasing why he’s a former UFC Lightweight Champion. Charles made quick work of Mateusz Gamrot; the lightweight controlled him with his punches and kicks in the first round.
Gamrot did manage to get a takedown on Oliveira, but the Brazilian got a chance to prove how much of a technical master he is on the ground by working a couple of submissions until he finally got a face crank for the submission win. This gets Charles out of the loss column and puts his professional record at 36 wins and 11 losses.
Gamrot slides back into the loss column after coming off a strong victory over Ľudovít Klein back in May. His professional record now stands at 25 wins and 4 losses.
Oliveira wasn’t the only former champion who bounced back in Rio as Deiveson Figueiredo got a split decision win over Montel Jackson. The action was rather light in this bout with the first two rounds seeing the most punches and takedowns.
Even then, a takedown from Figueiredo within the first 75 seconds of round one was the most notable thing until the third round. The final round just didn’t have much action from either man. That resulted in a split decision win for the former UFC Flyweight Champion. It also shattered a strong six-fight winning streak that Montel Jackson had coming in.
