Coming in, the former UFC Middleweight Champion had amassed a strong six-fight winning streak with his most notable victories being over Brad Tavares (via KO at UFC Fight Night 65), Uriah Hall (via unanimous decision at UFC 193), Rafael Natal (via unanimous decision at UFC 197), and Derek Brunson (via TKO at UFC Fight Night 101). At this time, Whittaker had a professional record of 17 wins and 4 losses.

The former Strikefroce Middleweight Champion was making a big comeback following his crushing loss to Yoel Romero at UFC 194, with Souza getting strong statement wins over Vitor Belfort (via TKO at UFC 198) and Tim Boetsch (via submission at UFC 208). At this point, the middleweight had only one loss on his UFC record. Souza’s professional record stood at 24 wins and 4 losses.
