Everyone wants a piece of Dustin Poirier.
The UFC fighter’s career has been on an upswing since his back-to-back wins over Conor McGregor. Since then, the former Interim Lightweight Champion has had battles against Justin Gaethje (For the BMF belt), Michael Chandler, Charles Olivera, and his most recent fight, Islam Makhachev.
But Dustin has been fighting for over ten years at this point. Following his loss to Makachev, “The Diamond” decided that it was time to hang up the boots. Poirier plans to have one more fight, and that’s hopefully in his hometown of Louisiana.
“I wish I could tell you more. I’ve actually been having calls every week with the UFC,” Poirier told The Schmo. “But it’s looking like summer in New Orleans is close to happening for my retirement fight. A pay-per-view in New Orleans this summer would be incredible. That’s what I’m pushing for. That’s what the UFC’s working toward, and things are getting pretty close: Lay the gloves down where it all started in Louisiana. It would be an honor for me.”
And everyone wants a piece of the 37-year-old. Poirier has been in a back and forth with Nate Diaz on social media recently. And then there’s Colby Covington, who wants to toss his name into the hat. Covington is no stranger to controversy and is clearly trying to stir up some more by getting Poirier to choose him for his final opponent. That means the California native wasted no time in talking down about Dustin.
“No word on the Dustin fight,” Covington said on his YouTube channel . “He’s been scared of my shadow for years, ever since we trained together at that old gym. The guy just knows what I bring to the table. He knows he can’t beat me."
“He can’t even get a lucky punch on me. He’s not even willing to try like his friend Jorge [Masvidal]. At least he tried. Dustin doesn’t even want to try.”
But that was just the beginning. Because Covington had no problems calling Dustin a b**ch for not choosing him as his last opponent:
“He’s going to go into retirement knowing that I owned his soul and he didn’t defend his family’s honor and legacy,” Covington said. “Dustin’s a little cuck, he’s Louisiana swamp trash and he’s a pathetic little b*tch.”
Covington schtick doesn’t work as well as it used to, but who knows, maybe Poirier will choose him just to punch the former Interim Welterweight Champion in the mouth.
