The highly anticipated fight between Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley may finally happen.
The rivalry between the former American Top Team members is well publicized by now; however, the opportunity to fight one another has been missed on several occasions. When Covington beat Rafeal dos Anjos for the Interim Welterweight title in 2018, the controversial fighter was in line to take on Woodley for the belt next.
Darren Till would end up getting the title shot as Covington had to undergo surgery following his bout against dos Santos. Since then, both men teased squaring off on multiple occasions, but the bout never came to fruition.
That may change on September 19 as the two welterweights are in talks to finally collide at the scheduled event in Las Vegas. Woodley himself actually posted the news on Instagram, with MMA Fighting confirming that the potential bout is indeed in the works.
While this could be another tease, both Woodley and Covington are looking to bounce back following their recent losses. The former Interim Welterweight Champion does have potential opponents in Leon Edwards and long-time rival Jorge Masvidal, but the 32-year-old has mainly targeted the 170-pound champion since his loss to Kamaru Usman.
Woodley has suffered consecutive losses against Usman and Burns, so the 38-year-old is moreso in need of this fight than Covington, who’s currently ranked at No. 2 in the division. This should be a good bout, if he does end up taking place.
