We may have our UFC 256 main event.
Several weeks ago, former UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor issued out a challenge to Dustin Poirier in a charity match that had nothing to do with the UFC.
Dana White responded by offering a deal to both men for early 2021 and while the former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion confirmed that he accepted the offer to fight McGregor, the “Irishman” remained silent about the offer given to him by the company. Well, until now.
McGregor revealed himself that he accepted the offer to fight Dustin Poirier, but the one condition is that the bout must take place on either Nov 21 (UFC 255) or Dec. 12 (UFC 256).
The news was backed up by Ariel Helwani of ESPN:
Should this fight happen again and McGregor beats Dustin Poirier for the second time then expect Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor II, if the UFC Lightweight Champion defeats Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. The undefeated champion stated in an interview with MMA Fighting that if the former two-division champion can beat “Diamond” then he’ll give McGregor another crack at the belt.
Even if Gaethje wins the belt at the upcoming pay-per-view then he’ll likely defend against McGregor first. We’ll keep you updated as this story continues to develop.
