Unfortunately, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away on July 3.
Nurmagomedov is the father of UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was a big instrument of the fighter’s training and an important figure in MMA altogether.
The loss is surely having a big effect on the UFC Lightweight Champion right now, and though Khabib vs. Justin Gaethje for the 155-pound championship is set for UFC 253 in September, Dana White and UFC officials are currently not bothering the Russia native about the upcoming fight (Transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie):
“We’re not messing with Khabib. We’re leaving Khabib alone. Khabib needs time,” White said. “Khabib is going to need time to get his head straight and figure out what’s next for him, you know? So we’re just gonna leave him alone for a little while. We’ll figure it out.”
The UFC President never states that his planned match-up against Justin Gaethje is off; however, he does make it clear that the decision is up to Khabib over what he wants to do next. As always, we’ll keep you updated should more news come out regarding the bout between Gaethje and Nurmagomedov.
