Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Georges St-Pierre may happen after all.
Throughout the years, the UFC Lightweight Champion has made it known that he would love to step into the octagon against his idol, Georges St-Pierre. The former Welterweight and Middleweight Champion has also expressed his interest in taking on the undefeated fighter in the past; however, Dana White has been adamant about not giving St-Pierre another title opportunity following his failure to defend the middleweight title.
Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently told UFC Arabia that Nurmagomedov does still intend to honor his father’s wishes and retire at 30-0. Should this claim be true, then Khabib only has one fight left, as his match-up against Justin Gaethje in October will happen, according to Dana White on ESPN:
“I don’t know. Obviously he has got this Gaethje fight that is a done deal,” White said. “He is fighting Gaethje next. Then I don’t know who his last fight would be to make him 30. I don’t know. . . No clue, I mean listen, at the end of the day, the Conor McGregor fight - I know Conor has always wanted that fight since the last one, I mean that is the fight to make. I don’t know. Again, we will see how this all plays out. But, the Gaethje fight is absolutely, positively the next fight for him.”
So who could end up fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov in his last bout?
While the UFC President is keen on Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor II, the 31-year-old has made it clear that he has no interest in fighting the former two-division champion again. However, when it comes to GSP, Dana White has seemingly turned a new leaf.
During the interview, Brett Okamoto questioned whether White would entertain the idea of giving Khabib a fight against GSP and the UFC President was definitely open to the super fight:
“Sure. Yeah, it’s the last fight of his career,” White said. “The guys been great. He’s been great to the company, he’s been great for the sport, and, I like Khabib Nurmagomedov a lot. I would do anything Khabib wanted to do.”
