Could we see Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Joseph Benavidez II in the near future?
Back at UFC Fight Night Norfolk, Figueiredo got the TKO victory over Benavidez; however, a UFC Flyweight Champion was not crown due to the former failing to make weight.
Once again, the 125-pound division is stuck at a standstill with no champion; however, due to several factors such as an accidental headbutt and Figueiredo missing weight, Dana White is willing to book that fight once again (transcript courtesy of fightful.com):
“That was a great fight,” White said during a recent media scrum (via Tristen Critchfield of
Sherdog).
“Absolutely, I think the head butt had a lot to do with the knockout too. Not taking anything away from [Figueiredo]. I think you have to do that fight again. First of all, he didn’t make weight. Joe Still fought him. There was a head butt. A lot of controversy in that fight. It was a great fight. Both guys came to fight. I’m sure you know how I feel about him not making weight. We’ll do it again. They both deserve it.”
While the UFC President wasn’t happy with Figueiredo failing to make weight, White is willing to give both men another crack at the flyweight title.
White never specified when the rematch could take place; however, both fighters have expressed a desire to have a rematch down the line. We’ll keep you updated should this bout be confirmed for a future event.
