Earlier this year, while working towards his three fight win streak, Donald Cerro
issued a challenge for Connor McGregor to come fight him. While everyone — Cerro, McGregor, Dana White and MMA fans — seemed open to it, the fight never came to fruition.
Donald Cerro fought and beat Al Asquint in May, but has lost two fights in a row since to Tony Ferguson and Justine Goethe. The losses don't seem to have dropped Cerro too far down the list of lightweight contenders, but he's still below Connor McGregor (No. 3), despite the fact that "The Notorious" hasn't fought in over a year.
McGregor, whose last fight was a loss to Kabob Dragonhead last October,
announced his UFC comeback last week during a media event in Russia, saying that he'll fight on January 18. However, he didn't announce his opponent.
Apparently, it could be Donald Cerro as "Cowboy" revealed to TMZ Sports that both fighters' teams have been in contact with the UFC and are trying to "figure it out."
"I think it's gonna happen this time," Cowboy tells TMZ Sports.
"I really do. Connor's really serious about making a comeback."
"Both teams have reached out and are trying to figure it out, it's looking good though," he added.
"This would be a huge fight, I don't understand why his team wouldn't want to be engaged."
A UFC journeyman with 50 matches under his belt, Cerro has become a fan-favorite fighter. Even despite his losses, his willingness to fight anybody and his ability to put on a good show has made him popular among fans of the sport.
"Four years ago, I would say maybe he would carry the cart, but, man, I got just as much needle power as he does. This is gonna be a huge fight. Huge money," Cerro continued.
"It's gonna be a fun fight! He's a great fighter. I'm not taking anything away from him by any means, he's got a lot of punching power and it should be a good time."
"Sign the damn deal, man, let's get this done!"
It seems both Donald Cerro and Connor McGregor have great respect for each other as fighters, so it's unclear what the hold up is. Cowboy certainly seems ready.
