In a surprise announcement, Daniel Cormier’s first UFC Heavyweight title fight won’t be against Brock Lesnar. Instead, Cormier will put his title on the line against Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230 in Madison Square Garden.
It’s been well known that UFC 230 was desperately in need of a main event.
An impromptu women’s flyweight bout for the vacant title between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks was previously slated to headline the event, however that bout has been scrapped following the announcement of Cormier vs. Lewis.
With a record of 21-5-1, Derrick Lewis is coming off a knockout win over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229. Lewis was dominated throughout the entire bout until he connected with a devastating blow to Volkav’s chin late in the final round. The victory marked his 10th knockout win inside the octagon, which ties him with Cain Velasquez for the most all-time in UFC heavyweight history.
