A new main event has been confirmed for UFC Kansas City.
Jamahal Hill and Khalil Roundtree Jr are out and Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates are in. Just like that, the UFC Fight Night Kansas City main event has been changed as the UFC themselves confirmed the new match-up without much context on why Hill vs. Rountree Jr. was scrapped.
Khalil would break his silence on why his main event bout was scrapped and it appears that it’s the classic case of a fighter getting injured during training.
“So [I had a phone call] with UFC, and it appears Jamahal Hill is injured, not able to fight in Kansas City on [April 26],” Rountree said on his YouTube channel. “So it looks like I’m out of a fight, and it’s going to be postponed — I don’t know when, but it looks like that’s the case so far.\
“I have no idea what the issue is, all I know is UFC told me that he had to pull out due to an injury,” Rountree said. “Usually they don’t give too many details as to what the injury is, or whatever, but they did tell me it was an injury and that he needed more time to recover from this injury, which is why they’re going to postpone the fight. So hopefully it stays that we stay matched up, just at a later date.”
The new main event is an interesting match-up as Carlos Prates is a hot up-and-comer who is rising through the welterweight ranks. Right now, Prates is on a 11-fight winning streak. Garry is fresh off a big loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. However, that was the first loss of MMA career, as Garry entered the fight 15 - 0. On paper, this should be a really good bout by fighters who could be the future of the welterweight division.
