So, I guess Jorge Masvidal vs. Kamaru Usman isn’t happening?
In light of Khabib Nurmagomedov pulling out his scheduled title fight against Tony Ferguson on April 18th, several fighters have stepped up and volunteered to face the former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion including “Gamebred” himself. According to the reigning UFC Welterweight Champion, he spoke to Dana White about Masvidal potentially fighting Ferguson and Usman is clearly not happy about plans changing again.
Usman claims that he offered to fight Masvidal at UFC 249 to save the pay-per-view; however, the 32-year-old says that his next challenger was no where to be found and when he was eventually contacted about moving the championship fight up, his offer was turned down due Masvidal not being preparing for the April 18th event.
However, once Usman got word that Masvidal offered to fight Ferguson at UFC 249, the welterweight champ went on Instagram to blast the number one contender for “clout chasing” and “running his mouth”. Usman also explains why he wanted to fight the Florida native, as he wanted to finally put an end to all the hype about Masvidal and make him “squeal like a pig”:
Not surprisingly, Masvidal fired back by claiming that Usman has turned down the fight several times, with Abraham Kawa – Masvidal’s manager – backing up his claim about the welterweight champion turning down the fight twice:
“If there’s one thing you know about Jorge, he doesn’t have to lie, he’s got no reason to lie, he’s got no issues,” Kawa stated on Instagram Live. “We have accepted the Usman fight twice now, two times. Once for NYC, we all know how that ended up. Usman said no, he didn’t want to make that fight happen.
“Now we accepted again and he’s saying we turned it down. That’s a damn lie. We got the phone call. We were asked. We knew this was coming. We said absolutely, let’s go.”
Masvidal also put out a video claiming that Kamaru Usman has multiple personalities, basically calling him a well-known liar. Like many of these social media spouts, this is just a game of he said, she said to most likely intensify their feud before the welterweight fight in July. We’ll keep you updated if any more news pops out from this situation.
