Luis Pena wasn't too happy with the results of his lightweight fight against Matt Frevola on Saturday night. The bout at UFC Fight Night 161 in Tampa Bay certainly delivered enough excitement to keep the fans happy, but Pena was left stunned and angered by the judges' decision.
Certain he had won the fight, Pena stormed out of the Octagon when they delivered the split decision win for Matt Frevola (29-28 x2, 28-29). He took to Twitter shortly afterward to express what he believes was a little home town favoritism on behalf of the judges.
Pena's frustration is certainly understandable as even the
judges' score cards reflected a close fight. Honestly, the fight probably could've gone either way as each fighter had his moments. But ultimately, it was Frevola who came out on top.
“I had to dig deep for that win, there was no way I was going to lose that third round, so I dug deep and go it done,” Frevola said after the win.
“Whatever submission he had in that first round was tight, I was in side control so I thought I was safe. I slammed him on his head with it, but then it got it tighter after. There was no way he was going to finish it, he would have had to put me out because I wasn’t tapping here. I found some room to breathe and let him gas his arms and then I could get out. Feels great to get some wins in a row now after a weird start to my UFC career.”
With the win, Frevola is now 8-1-1, while Pena falls to 7-2.
