The rivalry between BJ Penn and Matt Hughes is well documented.
In total, Hughes and Penn fought three times in the UFC; however, with both men vying to be the UFC Welterweight Champion, it's not surprising that the two fighters have collided inside of the octagon on multiple occassions. Going into his championship fight against Hughes, the Hawaii native was on a strong three-fight winning streak, besting Paul Creighton (via TKO at UFC 37), Matt Serra (via unanimous decision at UFC 39), Takanori Gomi (via submission at K-1 Rumble on the Rock 4). The only blemish on his record was a draw against Caol Uno at UFC 41.
Hughes was on a massive 15-fight winning streak, with the Illinois native defending his belt for the sixth time at UFC 46. Hughes successfully defended his title against Hayato Sakurai (via TKO at UFC 36), Carlos Newton (via TKO at UFC 38), Gil Castillo (via TKO at UFC 40), Sean Sherk (via unanimous decision at UFC 42), and Frank Trigg (via submission at UFC 45).
It was on this night that BJ Penn made a name for himself as he managed to topple the dominant champion and capture the UFC Welterweight title. Check out Penn getting the shocking victory over Matt Hughes below:
