This Saturday, former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will collide in a rematch seven years in the making.
Back in 2013, Pettis was still trying to make a name for himself within the promotion. The Wisconsin native failed to beat Clay Guida in his debut back at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos Finale; however, Pettis rebounded quickly by getting impressive wins over Jeremy Stephens (via unanimous decision at UFC 136) and Joe Lauzon (via KO at UFC 144).
Cerrone was looking to continue building up his name following his first defeat against Nate Diaz at UFC 141. The “Cowboy” racked up victories over Jeremy Stephens (via unanimous decision at UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier) and Melvin Guillard (via KO at UFC 150) after the crushing loss, and was hoping to extend his two-fight winning streak.
Both men were trying to climb the ranks within the division and on this night, the former UFC Lightweight Champion got the best of Cerrone in the first round. Check out Anthony Pettis beating The “Cowboy” in their first encounter seven years ago:
