Before their rubber match on Saturday, August 15, relive the night that Daniel Cormier pulled off the huge victory over Stipe Miocic for the UFC Heavyweight title.
Coming in, the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was making his return to the heavyweight division after competing in the 205-pound division for the past four years. Other than his fight against Jon Jones, which was overturned due to Jones failing his drug test, Cormier was on a strong five-fight winning streak that saw him beat Alexander Gustafsson (via split decision at UFC 192) and Anderson Silva (via unanimous decision at UFC 200) during his time in the division. Cormier had a record of 20 wins and 1 loss going into his fight against Miocic.
Since beating Fabrício Werdum for the UFC Heavyweight title at UFC 198, Miocic successfully defended the title against Alistair Overeem (via KO at UFC 203), Junior dos Santos (via TKO at UFC 211), and Francis Ngannou (via unanimous decision at UFC 220). Overall, Miocic came into the bout with a six-fight winning streak and a record of 18 wins and 2 losses.
Going in, many pegged Miocic as the favorite in the heavyweight fight; however, Cormier managed to pull of the shocking victory in the first round via knockout. Check out the championship fight below:
