Could we see Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Chiesa very soon?
Both welterweights are coming off big victories, with Burns defeating UFC veteran Demian Maia, and Chiesa beating Diego Sanchez (UFC 239) and Rafael dos Anjos (UFC Fight Night Raleigh). Like other 170-pound fighters, both men are trying to get a chance to fight for the UFC welterweight title and the two veterans stand in each other’s way of doing so.
Both Burns and Chiesa verbally agreed to a main event match-up on social media when the latter tossed out the idea once the coronoavirus epidemic ended:
In the end, this all comes down to Dana White approving the fight between the veteran fighters. Burns and Chiesa currently have some solid momentum behind them; Burns is in the midst of a five-fight winning streak, besting Gunnar Nelson, Alexey Kunchenko, Mike Davis, and Olivier Aubin-Mercier.
In addition to Sanchez and Rafael dos Anjos, Chiesa got a submission win over Carlos Condit at UFC 232, thus making his current streak three consecutive wins. At the moment, there’s no word on whether the UFC President is interested in booking the fight.
