Deadspin has published an article about what has been dubbed the Wednesday Night War. That is, of course, a reference to the fact that NXT will go head to head with TNT's weekly All Elite Wrestling show when it starts airing on the USA Network and WWE has been accused on multiple occasions of coounterprogramming the rival company.
Now, though, a WWE spokesperson has gone on record to say that NXT's move to USA has nothing to do with the competition.
"The premise to your story is wrong," they state.
"NXT has been on Wednesday nights since 2015 [sic] as I’m sure you know."
"It isn’t called counter-programming if you continue to air a series on the same day/time as it has been on for nearly five years," they added before concluding: "Perhaps you’ll ask AEW about counter-programming NXT?" That's a fair point as AEW was well aware that their show would compete with NXT on the WWE Network when they chose Wednesday nights.
Ultimately, everyone is probably trying to counterprogramme each other at this point but you really can't blame WWE for marking its turf. One thing that we can say, however, is that Wednesday nights are going to be very interesting this fall...
