Former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega was expected to join WWE once his New Japan Pro Wrestling contract expired but that didn't happen and he'll now compete for All Elite Wrestling.
At Double or Nothing on May 25th, Omega will once again square off with Chris Jericho in a match that stands a very good chance to stealing the show. However, in news which is bound to make you wish he was competing at WrestleMania instead, Omega has revealed that his dream opponent in WWE would be AJ Styles.
"AJ Styles [would be my dream WWE match]. But, for example, you have wrestlers saying, ‘I want to go to Wrestlemania.’ The WrestleMania for me was Tokyo Dome. My biggest dream has already come true. From now on, I want to concentrate on not only myself but wrestling overall. I do not want to imitate what I did in [New Japan]. I want to show my favorite professional wrestling to the world and I will in AEW. Of course, I love Japan. I still live here and I like wrestling in Japan. But I could not do much more in New Japan now."
Needless to say, that could have been a genuine match of the year but there's no way it's going to happen.
Omega could sign with WWE somewhere down the line but Styles is expected to retire and take on a backstage role once his current contract expires in two years from now. As always, stay tuned for more.
