After Roman Reigns managed to retain the Universal Championship in his match with Edge at Money in the Bank yesterday, John Cena's music hit, and he was welcomed back with open arms by fans.
We haven't seen the Leader of the Cenation since his cinematic Firefly Funhouse match with Bray Wyatt at last year's WrestleMania (which took place in the empty WWE Performance Center). However, it was clear this appearance was meant to lay the groundwork for Cena to face the Head of the Table at SummerSlam with the title on the line.
Now, Fightful Select has shared some insight into Cena's WWE status, revealing that The Suicide Squad star is being treated as a free agent and will appear on upcoming shows with no brand limitations.
This explains why he's set to address the WWE Universe at the start of tonight's RAW despite feuding with SmackDown's champion. Apparently, plans for Cena to return during SummerSlam were well-known backstage by the afternoon, though it still came as a surprise for fans (hours before the show, Cena was actually part of The Suicide Squad press conference).
The pro wrestler and actor still has his next movie, Argylle, for a European shoot in August, but the site adds that he won't be needed on set until after he's worked SummerSlam for WWE.
As always, keep checking back here for updates.
