Becky Lynch returned to WWE at SummerSlam and made short work of Bianca Belair. "The Man" defeated the SmackDown Women's Champion with a single move and fans were left beyond disappointed that the two women didn't square off in a proper match at the PPV.
Lynch has since been booked as a heel, another decision that's baffled many fans given how popular she's always been as a babyface. Now, the current champion has revealed the "last-minute" booking that led to her victory and surprisingly quick win at the Las Vegas show.
"It was very last-minute. It’s so hard, especially when you’ve been a babyface for so long," Lynch said of her heel turn. "The crowd likes you, they’re endeared to you, and then you go away."
"[Bianca had] been doing awesome. That’s a great rivalry. 'How do we make them not like one of them? Let’s do this quick,'" she continued. "I know a lot of people were upset saying, ‘Well, if they are going to do this, they should have had a long match.’ Well, if we had a long match and then I beat her, then I just beat her. That’s not good for her. If she’s robbed, we take something from her, she doesn’t expect it, we want to see her succeed."
"I think we’re doing just fine. It’s such a weird thing. It’s like, ‘I don’t like Becky as a heel. She’s so annoying.' What?! That’s the point," Lynch added. "People say, ‘Why would they do this to Bianca? I wanted her to win.’ Good. [That] is what we want. I think we’re doing a good job."
That sounds a lot like the WWE way of thinking, but it's debatable whether it worked as fans are still cheering Lynch and often boo Bianca. It was a strange booking decision, though the storyline looks set to continue playing out over the next couple of weeks as we get closer to Crown Jewel.
