CM Punk returned to pro wrestling on Friday during AEW Rampage, so we fully expected WWE to pull out all the stops for SummerSlam. Becky Lynch returned and squashed Bianca Belair to become SmackDown Women's Champion, while Roman Reigns found himself face-to-face with The Beast, Brock Lesnar, shortly after defeating John Cena to retain the Universal title.
Clearly, the stage is being set for another match between these two, but with Paul Heyman stuck in the middle, we're definitely expecting this to head to some interesting places.
That's something we'll likely see addressed during Friday night's episode of SmackDown, but after SummerSlam went off the air yesterday evening, Lesnar ended up taking aim at Cena. These two are old foes, to The Beast hitting him with a suplex and an F5 was by no means a huge surprise.
While this didn't air live to those at home, it could be that it was just meant to be a fun moment for fans in the building or a way of writing Cena off television so he can return to Hollywood. It's kind of a shame this wasn't shown during SummerSlam itself, but WWE likely wanted to send fans home happy by showing at least a little taste of what's to come from Lesnar now he's back.
