Chad Gable was recently interviewed by Sports Illustrated and he spoke about the decision to change his name first to Shorty Gable and then Shorty G. He delivered a passionate promo on
SmackDown recently where he talked about people being themselves and him embracing the fact he's short.
Now, though, he says that he feels like there was something missing from his previous character and this name change has actually ended up doing him a huge favour.
"That promo, I felt it very deeply," he said. "The height thing is a message about overcoming whatever people believe are your shortcomings. Everybody can identify with that. That’s an area Chad Gable, up to this point, had been missing. Now you know what he stands for and what he means. Last Friday was the very first step in that process, and it’s only going to get bigger."
Surprisingly, he went on to credit The Miz for helping him. "Miz is someone who has helped me a lot. He started giving me ideas and explained why a lot of my really serious ideas weren’t working. I started to understand his vision, and now I’m off and running with this new character. I’m going to have a great time with it and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it."
Reading between the lines here, Gable wasn't getting any TV time when he was portraying a serious athlete but as "Shorty G," he's entertaining fans and a huge part of Crown Jewel where he'll compete in a big 5 vs. 5 tag team match.
Do you think this change was the right move?
