When CM Punk returned to WWE, the stage was set for the Best in the World to clash with Seth Rollins. However. after the Second City Saint was injured during the Men's Royal Rumble match by Drew McIntyre, WWE has instead pivoted to a new rivalry.
McIntyre attacked Punk after he announced his torn tricep, only for him to get a measure of revenge at WrestleMania in an attack which culminated with Damian Priest cashing on on the Scottish Warrior to become World Heavyweight Champion.
Punk cost McIntyre the title again at Clash at the Castle in Glasgow, prompting him to brutally attack the Best in the World backstage.
During last night's RAW, Punk hit the ring to confirm he's now been medically cleared to compete. He demanded McIntyre come face him and started taping up his fists in anticipation of a fight.
While the former WWE Champion did show up, he refused to get in the ring because the crown in Green Bay didn't deserve to see it!
Officials had to hold Punk back before RAW General Manager made the match official by confirming McIntyre's suspension is now over. He then revealed that, if either man touches the other before the PLE, they'll be suspended indefinitely.
When talk turned to him needing a referee for the match, out came Seth Rollins. He announced himself as the special guest official and vowed to put both Punk and McIntyre in their place.
It's going to be very interesting to see how WWE books this match and whether it's a one-off or the start of a much bigger rivalry. Punk could do with a win after such a long time away, but at the same time, so could McIntyre following a recent losing streak.
