CM Punk vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin. It was a dream match most of us wanted to see.

It was no secret that Punk was a big Stone Cold fan. He even wore an Austin shirt during his legendary pipe bomb promo. Both Austin and Punk have had several interactions on WWE television, but nothing that seemed to indicate a future match between these two.

Well, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, he was asked if WWE had ever planned a CM Punk vs Steve Austin match, and Meltzer noted it was never in the works, adding “no. It was not close at all. It was never going to happen.”

This answer should surprise no one as Austin has continuously stated that his final match was with the Rock at WrestleMania 19 (Austin has had other matches, but it brief encounters and nothing deep as his match with The Rock).
