Roman Reigns returned last night following the Universal Championship match between Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt at SummerSlam, attacking both competitors. The Big Dog's new look, Stone Cold-esque t-shirt and more aggressive attitude have led to speculation that he may have turned heel, but we're not so sure.
Before Reigns took time off in the buildup to WrestleMania, reports indicated that Vince McMahon was planning to give his character a bit more edge, so that's most likely what we witnessed last night. An unprovoked post-match beat-down is a heelish thing to do, but does it count when the victims are a couple of remorseless monsters?
WWE hasn't clearly defined which end of the spectrum Wyatt and Strowman are supposed to land on, but if they wanted to establish Roman as a full-on bad guy upon his return, they would have had him single out a full-on babyface. There is another theory doing the rounds that he'll be revealed as the leader of Retribution, but we're not buying that at all.
At the end of the day, it may not matter too much one way or the other. However Reigns is perceived after last night, Vince is clearly hoping that booking him as an edgy badass will push him all the way over with fans (there are still a lot of detractors out there), so there won't be as much backlash when he inevitably takes the title off The Fiend!
We should get a clearer picture of what the plan is for The Big Dog moving forward later tonight on Raw, but for now let us know what you think in the comments.
