Randy Orton challenged Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, and despite persistent rumors and a lot of speculation that The Viper would capture the title, The Scottish Superstar managed to retain.

This was a very good match, with both guys laying in their stuff and telling a great story in the ring. The finish has proved to be somewhat divisive, but it actually worked pretty well if you think about it.

Drew and Randy played up the fact that everyone was anticipating either the Claymore or the RKO ending the match, and despite multiple attempts, the bout ultimately ended with McIntyre catching his opponent in a backslide and scoring the 3-count.

No Ric Flair, no run-ins, no shenanigans - just the babyface champ retaining by out-thinking the heel.

It'll be interesting to see if the feud continues after this, but we can't see The Viper being content with this loss. Tune in to Raw later tonight for the fallout.
