When CM Punk returned to WWE, the idea was for him to feud with then-World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, the Best in the World was injured in the Royal Rumble after tearing his tricep while taking Drew McIntyre's Future Shock DDT.
With that, a feud started between the two men which has continued ever since. For starters, McIntyre brutally attacked the injured Punk and gloated about it at every opportunity.
In retaliation, Punk attacked McIntyre at WrestleMania moments after he won the World Heavyweight title, allowing Damian Priest to cash in and take his newly won championship. Then, at Clash in the Castle last weekend, the Second City Saint ensured McIntyre didn't win it back.
In response, the Scottish Warrior "quit" WWE during Monday night's RAW.
As promised, Punk opened SmackDown to share an update on his recovery. However, before he could do so, Paul Heyman hit the ring and implored his old friend to leave Chicago...and to take his former manager with him. Why? Solo Sikoa and The Bloodline didn't want him there.
Punk refused to acknowledge them and got a helping hand from Cody Rhodes - wielding a baseball bat - before Solo, Tama Tonga, and Tanga Loa could jump him.
That wasn't where Punk's night on SmackDown ended, though; later in the evening, Grayson Waller and #DIY were arguing backstage, only to be interrupted by banging on an arena door. A crew member opened it and a bloodied and beaten Punk was shown lying at the feet of McIntyre!
He proceeded to carry his foe out to the entrance ramp and left him there, resulting in Punk eventually being stretchered out of the building. Needless to say, we'd expect a match at SummerSlam to follow!
