Drew McIntyre lost the WWE Championship to Randy Orton during last night's Hell in a Cell PPV, and took a nasty bump off the side of the cage before being hit with the RKO in the middle of the ring.
During today's Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the match, and revealed that McIntyre taking that fall was inspired by the one Shawn Michaels took back in 1997 during the first ever Hell in a Cell match (in which he faced The Undertaker).
"Drew Galloway, when he was a kid, saw the match with Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in the very first Hell in the Cell match and this was the bump Shawn Michaels took in that match," Meltzer explained. "I guess there was a part of him that wanted to take that bump and so he did."
McIntyre's run as WWE Champion was an enjoyable one, and it's a shame to see it reach its end. Moving forward, it's unclear what WWE has planned for him, but now he's established himself as a top star in the company, it's hard to imagine the former champion slipping down the card.
As always, we'll be sure to keep you guys updated, but stay tuned for more during tonight's episode of RAW.
