Last night's episode of SmackDown took place in Toronto, Canada and was billed as a 25th-anniversary celebration of WWE Hall of Famer Edge's career.
In the main event, the Rated R Superstar squared off with Sheamus and ultimately emerged victorious after hitting the Celtic Warrior with two Spears. Once the show had gone off the air, however, Edge seemingly announced his retirement.
WWE has posted a snippet of the promo, but recordings on social media show Edge telling fans that "this is my last time in front of y'all," strongly hinting that he doesn't have it in him for another match.
Prior to SmackDown, we'd heard that Edge is no longer under contract with WWE and that does appear to be the case. There's talk of him heading to AEW to reunite with Christian, though we can't imagine WWE would be happy about that.
If this is it for Edge in WWE, we're pleased to see him go out on a high. Since his miraculous return from a career-ending injury, WWE hasn't really done the former WWE Champion justice; the pandemic did little to help matters, of course, but he's never won a title and rarely been in the main event scene.
Edge did, however, headline WrestleMania, albeit in a losing effort against Roman Reigns.
A low point came when he formed The Judgement Day, with what felt like a never-ending feud ensuing once he'd been kicked out of the group. There have been plenty of high points, though, and we know a match with Sheamus was something Edge was keen on.
