Sadly, ECW Icon Sabu passed away on Sunday.
The hardcore pioneer who helped revolutionize the business in the late 90’s suddenly passed away. The news comes as a complete shock since Terry Bunk (Sabu’s real name) competed a month prior to his death.
He fought Joey Janela in a No Rope Barbed Wire match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break. As expected, it was a violent, violent match between the former ECW World Champion and Joey Janela. Now there was only so much that Sabu can do as the man was 60-years-old, but there was never a point where people felt that something was wrong Sabu. In fact, there wasn’t any news about his health problems prior to his death.
Sabu professionally started all the way back in 1985. Even before ECW, he competed in WWE, but his fame comes from his time in the Paul Heyman led promotion. Sabu had legendary battles against RVD, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, and Sandman, with him winning the ECW World Heavyweight Championship on two separate occasions. Sabu left ECW in 2000 and worked in WWE and TNA.
He does have a notable WrestleMania win on his resume as Sabu sided with RVD, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman to take on The New Breed (Elijah Burke, Kevin Thorn, Marcus Cor Von and Matt Striker). In recent years, The Hardcore legend has been working various indie promotions with his signature ECW style that got him over with audiences. Sabu left behind a huge legacy, and plenty of his friends and co-workers came out to honor the ECW legend.
