John Cena's wrestling career is starting to wind down and while that's a great shame, the fact he's done pretty much everything during his WWE career makes it a little easier to accept. One thing he never got around to doing, though, is turning heel and now former WWE writer Kevin Eck has shed some light on why that never happened (on more than one occasion believe it or not).
The first heel turn was supposed to come right around the time WWE started pushing Sheamus but Vince McMahon clearly didn't have enough faith in The Celtic Warrior to turn Cena at the time.
"Vince had agreed to do it, but then he changed his mind and said that we can’t do it. This was back around the time when McMahon was really looking at Sheamus to get his push. The question was if we turn John Cena heel then who is he going to work with, who will be the top babyface?"
The second heel turn, meanwhile, was cancelled because WWE had just landed a huge Kmart merchandising deal and understandably didn't want the face of that to be WWE's biggest bad guy.
"That was the feeling back then, then we came up with some scenarios, and believe it or not, Cena was on board with it, but right around that time there was a big clothing line for John Cena at Kmart, and Vince McMahon was like, ‘Oh Jesus Christ, he has a deal with Kmart, and now we’re going to turn him heel?’ So, Kmart is to blame for Cena not turning heel. During a meeting once Vince had a huge smile on his face, and he tells everyone that I know you’ve wanted John Cena as a heel for a long time, but we just can’t turn him heel and that was the end of that."
At this point, it's best to accept that a John Cena heel turn simply isn't going to happen and that's probably for the best at this point in his career. What do you guys think of these comments?
