WrestleMania is not even a full week in the past yet, but the pendulum never stops swinging in WWE, so it's already on to the next premium live event.
That will be WWE Backlash, taking place Saturday, May 10, 2025 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
To no surprises, the main event has been announced, and Randy Orton will be wrestling in his hometown to rekindle one of his biggest rivalries of his career as he faces John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
This week's Monday Night Raw featured The Viper hitting an RKO out of nowhere on Cena—something he's done countless times over their 25 year history together, predominantly as enemies—and their animosity carried over into tonight's episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
After a promo segment where Orton immediately interrupted Cena before he could even talk, they spoke about how in Orton's mind, Cena needs to have some kids and to just grow up. Cena, on the other hand, said that he hasn't had children because he's been busy raising everyone else's for the past quarter of a century.
Cena made sure to throw in some digs about how as "the last real champion", he plans to retire with the Undisputed WWE Championship and in turn, erase three generations of Ortons by taking the belt away and preventing Randy from ever winning the true title ever again, as Orton is a 14 time champion compared to Cena's 17th world title win.
Despite Cena throwing the title belt at Orton for a sneak attack, The Apex Predator managed to turn things around and get off another RKO to lay out the champion for the second time in a week.
As it stands right now, this is the only match that has been announced for Backlash. There is always a chance more matches are announced on SmackDown, so be sure to stay tuned to TheRingReport as any of those announcements will be made.
What do you think will go down at Backlash? Does Orton have a chance to dethrone Cena, or will he just be the first victim of this new reign? Drop your predictions in the comments below!
