Dolph Ziggler had a shot of being added to the WWE Championship match between Kofi Kingston and Samoa Joe at Extreme Rules, but only if he managed to defeat the former in a 2-out-of-3 falls match in the main event of SmackDown LIVE.
The Showoff managed to score the first pin and continued to wear down the WWE Champion with a merciless assault, but in the end the ever-resilient New Day member rebounded and won two straight falls to ensure that he only has to defend against one challenger at the PPV.
This new penchant for multiple fall matches reportedly stems from Vince McMahon not wanting any actual in-ring action to air during commercial breaks. This was a great bout, to be fair, but do we really need to see The Miz vs. Elias 2-out-of-3 falls? No, we bloody don't.
It'll be a shame if this stipulation is hammered into the ground, so hopefully WWE figures out another way to cut to a commercial without ruining a wrestling match. Are we asking too much of them?
