WWE originally planned to push Mustafa Ali right to the main event of WrestleMania where he would have likely challenged Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship. However, an ill-timed injury led to him being pulled from the Elimination Chamber, with Kofi Kingston thrown in at the last-minute (leading to #KofiMania and his eventual title win at the Show of Shows).
It's hard not to wonder about what might have been, and Kingston revealed in a recent interview with Metro that there were plans to address that in a match at WrestleMania 37.
"It was perfect! It was written, you didn’t even have to go out of your way to creatively write anything else, it was perfect! But alas, that’s not the direction that ‘the office,’ I guess, wanted to go in," Kofi said of scrapped plans for him to face Ali on the Grandest Stage of Them All. "That’s just kinda the way that it goes! Maybe down the line we’ll get a chance to revisit that opportunity."
"I was told a few things, and we start working towards those things that we’re told, and then all of a sudden it’s not those things. But that’s really kind of standard fare for us. It was really disappointing, man, because I think he’s so amazing in the ring and such an innovator," he continued. "He finds ways to do the littlest things in such a different way, but he puts his own spin on it. He has a great mind for the business and a great mind for storytelling."
Kingston won't get that opportunity because Ali has requested his release from WWE (you can read more on that here). As for this WrestleMania, he wasn't even featured on the card, while The New Day - Kingston and Xavier Woods - lost the RAW Tag Team titles to AJ Styles and Omos.
