Kurt Angle's final run in WWE was something of a disappointment. He clearly was struggling due to past neck injuries and his final match was at
WrestleMania in a losing effort to Baron Corbin, a decision made to get a ton of heat for the unpopular heel. Now, though, the Olympic Gold Medallist has revealed his original retirement plans.
"Yeah, most likely [I would end my career] with John Cena," he admitted, "but I decided not to because I chose to — I wanted John last WrestleMania, but we already had a storyline going with Baron Corbin and myself."
"Vince said, ‘If you’re gonna retire you’re gonna finish with Baron Corbin if you don’t mind because you guys have a great storyline’ and Vince was right. I said, ‘Okay I’ll wrestle Baron and it’ll be my last match and that’s it."
Fans were massively disappointed with Angle choosing Corbin as his final opponent but the match did generate heat for Corbin even if it does still feel like the wrong choice. After all, Cena retiring Angle after facing him in his first WWE match would have been a great way to end his story but Cena instead appeared for a comedy segment with Elias as the Doctor of Thuganomics.
