The news that Cody Rhodes had decided to leave AEW shocked the wrestling world, particularly as he was one of the company's EVPs. Immediately, reports that he would sign with WWE started swirling and the company even started dropping hints about his possible return on RAW and SmackDown.
Now, with WrestleMania weeks away, there's still no sign of Rhodes in WWE. In fact, he's still a free agent as Dave Meltzer has confirmed previous reports that talks between the two sides have stalled.
"Negotiations hit a snag," Meltzer confirmed. "He has multiple offers. He has to make a decision. WWE wants the decision made soon for obvious reasons. The ball is in his court."
WWE's creative teams had reportedly been told to come up with ideas for Rhodes at the Show of Shows, but everything was put on hold last week when it became clear he was by no means locked in. The only major WWE Superstar without an opponent at this stage is Seth Rollins; he could issue an open challenge during the Premium Live Event that's answered by Rhodes, but it would be odd for WWE not to announce that beforehand, especially in the midst of sluggish ticket sales.
It's still possible Rhodes will return to AEW or have something to do with the relaunched Ring of Honor.
