Matt Hardy Responds To Critics Of The WWE Interpretation Of His Bizarre "Broken" Persona
"Broken" Matt Hardy originated back in Impact wrestling and became immensely popular, but WWE's "Woken" interpretation of the gimmick has not gone over quite so well. Hardy addresses this in a new interview...
Matt Hardy recently went full "Woken" on RAW, and after a series of out-there interviews and promos, had his first match in-character.
So far, audience reaction has been mixed.
Many seem to feel that WWE didn't allow Matt to explore the "Woken Universe" to its full potential in the buildup to the persona switch, which caught fans that weren't already familiar with the character a little off-guard.
During an interview with IGN, Hardy addressed the divisive reaction:
"It’s starting to take hold. I think the hardcore fans have to remember that patience is paramount. There’s such a huge percentage of the WWE Universe and the WWE fanbase who aren’t familiar with the story of the Woken-slash-Broken character so we have to educate them and get them up to speed and help them understand what’s going on. And that’s something the die hard fans are frustrated with. But things are going to get where they need to be and this is a process now that’s playing out over TV. The biggest thing I’d say to people is just sit back and enjoy this truly truly fun and jubilant ride.”
Matt touches on what many perceive to be the problem here, but shouldn't that whole education have happened before he debuted as the Woken character?
At any rate, let's hope WWE allows Hardy to do a bit more than stand in the middle of the ring laughing very soon, because the crowds are clearly beginning to lose interest.
