A lot was made of Mike Kanellis recently asking for his
WWE release over Twitter, but despite being seen as unprofessional by some, most felt it was understandable given the horrendous angles the talented wrestler had been landed with ever since joining the company.
Most recently, Mike was part of a bizarre "storyline" which saw him repeatedly belittled and humiliated by his real-life wife Maria. Many assumed this was the straw that broke the camels back for Bennett, but that wasn't necessarily the case.
During a new interview (transcript via
Wrestling, Inc), Mike said it wasn't the storyline so much as the fact that there wasn't going to be a payoff that frustrated him so much.
"My only issue was it didn’t go anywhere. If I’m going to do a storyline like that, I want it to go somewhere. I think the fans would like that too. There should be a payoff. Because there wasn’t a payoff, it’s like, what was the point? I don’t mind thinking outside the box. I don’t mind embarrassing myself, I mean, I wrestle in underwear for a living. I really don’t care. If they say I have to be emasculated by my wife, I’m like, fine, I don’t care. I get offended when it doesn’t go anywhere."
Mike is still locked into his contract for a few more years, but
WWE may decide to cut their loses and let him out of it if they have no plans to utilize him on TV.
