We've now heard countless backstage reports about chaos prior to Sunday's Royal Rumble, and both the men and women's bouts have been panned by wrestling fans and "critics" alike.
They were both pretty boring efforts from WWE, with far too few surprises in the men's match and predictable outcomes in both that lessened their impact to a large degree. Both Ronda Rousey and Brock Lesnar are now heading to WrestleMania, but the latter wasn't the match's original winner.
According to PW Insider, WWE planned to have Matt Riddle win the match!
Plans changed a lot in the week leading up to the show, with it ultimately decided that Lesnar would enter the Rumble and win in order to head to the Show of Shows to challenge Brock Lesnar. Randy Orton was also put forward as a possible winner before the focus shifted to Riddle and the Lesnar.
Common sense says the plan was probably for Orton to win the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber, setting the stage for RK-Bro to split up and Riddle to be crowned champion on the Grandest Stage of Them All. It's possible something similar could still pan out, but we can't say for sure.
Do you wish Riddle had won the Royal Rumble match?
