We all know that Roman Reigns was supposed to defeat Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania, but when The Big Dog dropped out of the match due to health concerns, nobody actually expected his replacement to win the match.
Well, here we are three days later and Braun Stroweman is the new Universal Champion.
It was a surprising development for a number of reasons, but mostly because we all assumed Goldberg would retain in order to face Reigns at a later date. However, it looks like WWE's hand may have been forced because Goldberg had no intention of sticking around!
According to Wrestle Talk (take it with a pinch of salt, but it does ring true), the decision to have The Monster Among Men walked out with the title is simply down to Goldberg not wanting to add any more dates to his current deal. For that reason, it was settled that whoever ended up replacing Roman in the match would win the gold. Apparently, there was even talk of Jeff Hardy facing the former WCW legend at one point.
Whatever the reason, the circumstances don't bode well for Strowman holding on to that title for long. Expect maybe one PPV defense, then it's another run for Roman.
