On this Friday's episode of SmackDown, the United States Championship Invitational finals will take place when WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio squares off with his fellow LWO member Santos Escobar.
The winner will go on to challenge Austin Theory, but the fact two babyfaces (who are part of the same stable) will go head-to-head...well, it's undeniably intriguing.
The current expectation is that the title match will take place at SummerSlam, but Dave Meltzer believes the plan is for it to take place on an upcoming episode of SmackDown. Presumably, this means the United States Championship will be on the line the night before the PLE on the night of August 4.
It's a shame the title isn't being showcased at SummerSlam, but the same thing happened with the Undisputed Tag Team Championships the night before Money in the Bank last month.
There's also speculation online that WWE might have inadvertently spoiled the winner of Mysterio vs. Escobar.
During a WWE Live event in Mexico City on Saturday, Escobar squared off with Theory. It's no secret WWE uses non-televised events to test out future rivalries and matches, so we'd definitely take this as a solid indication Mysterio isn't picking up the win on Friday.
That makes sense on a number of levels, particularly as the Master of the 619s has been intent on putting over his fellow LWO members in recent months. A feud between Escobar and Theory could put the former on the map, particularly if he picks up an upset win.
Still, nothing is set in stone quite yet. Elsewhere at this Mexico City WWE Live Event, WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns made a rare appearance to defend his title against Mysterio.
However, some timely intervention from "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio helped ensure the Tribal Chief held on to his title.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
