Fans fully expected this week's episode of Raw to set up Drew McIntyre's next challenger for the WWE Championship in the buildup to SummerSlam, but instead we got a rather embarrassing segment with Dolph Ziggler and the announcement that he'd be getting another shot at the title next Monday.
Well, reports indicate that we were originally going to find out who'll be facing McIntyre for the gold at the PPV, and it would have been Randy Orton.
“The big item on tonight’s show was originally to be an angle involving Orton and Drew McIntyre to set up their planned WWE Championship match as the main event for SummerSlam," revealed Dave Meltzer on The Wrestling Observer Radio. "As of this morning, that was still on the show, but numerous other items have been changed.”
Orton's unsanctioned match with The Big Show was confirmed last week, so if this is accurate, The Viper would have been pulling double duty.
We're not sure why plans were altered, but as far as we know Orton is still being lined up as the next challenger for Drew's title. Will we see The Legend Killer get involved in next week's championship match? We'd say it's a safe bet!
