Rey Mysterio Was Legitimately Injured During SMACKDOWN - Here's What Was Originally Planned For His Match

Yesterday evening's episode of SmackDown saw Rey Mysterio square off with his fellow LWO member, Santos Escobar, with the winner set to face Austin Theory next week for the United States Championship.

The match got off to a strong start, with the action eventually moving outside the ring when Escobar hit a running dive on the WWE Hall of Famer.

However, when we came back from the break, a trainer was shown looking Mysterio over. It was suggested he had suffered some sort of whiplash-related injury, and the decision was made to award the match to Escobar due to the Master of the 619 no longer being able to compete.

Mysterio was able to get back to his feet and many fans have questioned whether this was a storyline decision to avoid either Superstar being pinned.

According to Fightful Select, Mysterio was legitimately injured and original plans called for Escobar to win the match cleanly. An audible was called for the bout to end early, and it's said this meant a later backstage segment was also cut from the show.

It's always a shame to see something like this happen and we're hoping Mysterio recovers quickly.

Escobar recently defeated Theory and he's now something of a favourite heading into that match with Theory. WWE is clearly intent on making the babyface a top star in the company, and a title win would obviously go a long way in putting him on the map.
