With Cody Rhodes waiting in the wings, we knew Sami Zayn was never actually going to defeat Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship, but for a brief moment during the main event of last night's Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event, it looked like the hometown hero might just pull off a massive victory.
The Montreal crown were obviously behind Zayn every step of the way, and the Tribal Chief was practically booed out of the building, with "F-you Roman" chants echoing through the arena for the entire match.
Sami put up a hell of a fight and even managed to kick out of Roman's devastating spear, but as soon as the ref goes down, you know a bit of skulduggery is near.
When Paul Heyman handed Reigns a chair, Jey Uso entered the ring and put himself between his cousin and the man he thinks of as a brother. Main Event Jey looked like he might be about to turn on the Head of the Table, but never got the chance as Sami mistimed a spear and took him out.
After that, the outcome was inevitable. Reigns wailed on his opponent with several viscous chair shots before hitting one final spear for the 3-count.
Jimmy Uso then entered the fray and began to lay a beat-down on Sami, but Kevin Owens soon arrived on the scene and doled out a few Stunners. Zayn was given a chance to recover, and managed to hit Reigns with a Helluva Kick to send the crown home happy... ish!
A disappointing outcome, for sure, but again, it just wouldn't have made sense for Zayn to win the titles this close to WrestleMania. The American Nightmare is now positioned to be the man to finally end Reigns' incredible title run - but is there a chance Sami could also be involved?
Even if we do get a triple-threat match, those belts are 99.99999% going to Cody!
