Sami Zayn, who is of Syrian descent, has never been afraid to voice his opinion (even when it's landed him in trouble in the past), and recently took to Twitter to show his support for Palestine as conflict with Israel intensifies.
On May 9th, Zayn tweeted, “There is no viable moral defense for stealing people’s homes based on their ethnicity.#FreePalestine #SaveSheikhJarrah." He then followed up with this response to politician Andrew Yang.
Both Tweets were since deleted, and we may now know why.
According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, Zayn's comments "wound up" several pro-Israel groups, who ended up contacting WWE, NBCU and FOX. Whether this directly resulted in Zayn being asked to remove his Tweets is unclear, but it's probably a safe enough assumption.
This situation resulted in #WeSupportSamiZayn trending on Twitter, with many fans backing Zayn’s support for Palestine.
WWE Superstars are "encouraged" not to engage in public political discourse, but there are some things men and women of principal simply won't keep silent about. Whether this results in any repercussions for Zayn remains to be seen, but we don't expect him to be the only high-profile WWE employee to speak out over the next few days.
