Samoa Joe Talks WWE Universal Championship Goals, Facing John Cena, And Relationship With CM Punk
Samoa Joe talks here about why he's setting his sights on the WWE Universal Championship, why he hopes to face John Cena again after eighteen years, and CM Punk's reaction to him deciding to sign with WWE.
Samoa Joe making the leap from TNA to NXT was a very big deal, but wrestling fans the world over were thrilled to see him make his main roster debut a couple of weeks ago on RAW. Positioned as a top star in the company, the future is looking bright for Joe, and in a new interview, he's shared his thoughts on everything from that to current plans for this year's WrestleMania.
"Me being on Raw, my main goal is the Universal Championship," he revealed, "and you got a lot of top tier competitors kind of vying for that title: Goldberg, you have Brock, you have Roman, you have Kevin Owens, I mean, the current champion now. I have no problem going in there and smashing any of them and taking the belt from them." When he'll get the chance to enter the title picture remains to be seen, but given the manner in which he dominated the NXT Championship picture for over a year, you have to believe that will happen sooner rather than later.
Of course, one clash everyone would like to see is Samoa Joe vs. John Cena, and while they may be on separate brands right now, Joe is already thinking about taking on the leader of the Cenation.
"It's been 18 years, 18 years ago, myself and John Cena had a match and based off that match WWE inevitably hired him, and brought him along and I went my own separate way. It's been 18 years since me and John have been in the ring together. John, you know, early in my career, he's been a close personal friend and we drove a lot of miles together, and it would be an absolute pleasure to reunite in the ring and once again, smash him in the face and take everything from him."
Finally, talk turned to CM Punk, his UFC debut, and how the former WWE Superstar felt to see Joe join the company shortly after he parted ways with them. "When I came here [WWE], I remember, for years he was kind of championing my cause to be in the WWE and to see me now, he's like 'Oh, of course, the minute I'm gone, you're here' and so, between me and him, it's always been a very interesting relationship, we're kind of like brothers who fight all the time."
Will we ever get to see them reunite in the squared circle? That remains to be seen, but here's hoping!
